Farewell to St. Paul’s

During the summer the leaders of St. Paul’s decided that in view of dwindling membership, it would be reasonable to cease trying to maintain a church and concentrate on the outreach that has been such an important part of the life of the congregation. After consultation with Fr. Sid Breese, members reluctantly voted to close the church at the end of the year, but to continue normal services and activities until then. However, when the Rev. Mary Schrom Breese received a call to a parish in the Diocese of Kansas, to begin in September, Fr. Sid agreed to accompany her, and has since been madePriest-in-Charge of two nearby congregations. At that point, St. Paul’s members voted not to hold more services after the end of September.

Our last service, on September 29 with Fr. Sid celebrating, although sad, wasalso celebratory, with student singers, a litany of thanksgiving, and the attendance of friends and former members.

Remaining funds were divided among the traditional First Sunday Offering recipients.

News from Fr. Sid and Mary Breese

It’s official: their house in St. Joseph is sold, and the house they like in Independence, Kansas, is finally theirs!

A Litany of Thanksgiving for St. Paul’s

As used during the service of September 29

Let us give thanks to God for all that St. Paul’s is and has been:

Father, we give you thanks.

For all the priests who have served here for the last 70 years:

Father, we give you thanks

For all the people who formed the new congregation, worshipping in homes and in a room above the bus station:

Father, we give you thanks

For those who gave generously of money, time, and labor to build this church:

Father, we give you thanks.

For people who came and became part of the congregation through the years; for those who died as members, for those who did their part and moved away, and for those who remain:

Father, we give you thanks.

For all of our organists and other musicians, many of them students, who have enriched our worship and gladdened our hearts, and especially for those who have joined us in the end:

Father, we give you thanks.

For the children and teenagers who grew up here and were formed by the liturgy and by their friendships:

Father, we give you thanks.

For all of the traditions, past and present, of St. Paul’s:

Father, we give you thanks.

For all of the friendships established here:

Father, we give you thanks.

For visitors and those who have touched our lives or whose lives we may have touched, knowingly or unknowingly:

Father, we give you thanks.

For community members, often from other churches, who have participated in our service of Advent Lessons and Carols and who have joined in preparing the Red Door Chili Supper through many years:

Father, we give you thanks.

For our sister churches in Sacred Hills, St. Oswald’s and St. Mary’s:

Father, please bless them in their ministries.

Please bless us all as we go on our ways, and keep us faithful in your path of love.

Lord, bless us and keep us. We ask in Jesus’ name.   AMEN

Advent

In the midst of all the other preparations for Christmas, the decorating, the cooking, the choosing of gifts, the parties,

Services of the Sacred Hills Regional Ministry

Sunday, October 6:          Holy Eucharist and Harvest Festival at St. Oswald’s, 11:00, followed by traditional potluck meal for all Sacred Hills members and all guests.

Other Sunday services of Sacred Hills will be announced later.

United Thank Offering

October is the UTO collection month, and the usual First Sunday offering from St. Paul’s always goes to the UTO. Many of you may remember that it was through a UTO grant that St. Oswald’s was able to install an indoor restroom. Most grants go to Episcopal churches in the U.S., but foreign grants are also sometimes given.

Farewell to Fr. Sid

In September Sacred Hills reluctantly said goodbye to Fr. Sid Breese, who has led and served us all so well since 2008. In addition to celebrating the Eucharist at all three churches, he has also participated in their principal festivals, annual meetings, charitable events, and student-friendly activities. Fr. Sid’s ministry was celebrated at St. Oswald’s on Sunday, September 8 with a potluck meal along with members of St. Mary’s and St. Paul’s. His last service at St. Paul’s was celebrated Sunday, September 29 with some former members, student singers, and friends. The congregation took him out for breakfast following the service.

Fr. Sid leaves us to accompany his wife Mary to her new ministry in a church in Sedan, Kansas. Some new ministry for him nearby is also being considered.

In Remembrance

Larry Boyd, one of the people who helped build St. Paul’s present church in the 50s, died September 14. He contributed not only financially but also by helping deliver (and probably assemble and finish) the pews. He and his wife Rita, who preceded him in death, raised their three daughters at St. Paul’s. Larry will be remembered for his quiet faithfulness.

Harvest Festival at St. Oswald’s

The principal service of Sacred Hills on Sunday, October 6 will be the Holy Eucharist as part of Harvest Festival at St. Oswald’s in the Fields. As usual, the service will be followed by a potluck communal meal.

In case you missed them last month or need a reminder, the directions to St. Oswald’s are as follows: St. Oswald’s is located in southeast Atchison County.  Directions from Mound City are Route N for 5 miles north and then north on Keystone Drive for 4 miles.  From Fairfax, take Highway 46 east 7 miles and then 4 miles south on EE. From Maryville the church is 19 miles west on Highway 46 and then 4 miles south on EE.                                              From Nancy Zeliff

Diocesan Convention

This year’s Diocesan Convention will be held Saturday, October 26, preceded by a short social gathering on Friday evening. The Bishop’s Warden of each congregation is responsible for sending in the registrations for its delegates. It is important that all congregations be represented in diocesan affairs.

First Sunday Offering

The First Sunday offering from St. Paul’s in September will be for Our Little Roses Home for girls in Honduras.) Girls who could have spent their lives (or died) on the streets are now graduating from high school and even college! Let’s continue to help the home help more girls. Please mark your offering.

In Remembrance

Diana Taylor, former secretary of Sacred Hills and editor of the Beacon, died July 24. We remember her cheerful greetings and the bright smile that she kept until the end, and we offer our sympathy to her husband Dave Taylor and to their three daughters. Diana’s birthday would have been September 17.

Looking Ahead

Family and friends of St. Oswald’s in the Fields Episcopal Church of rural Skidmore return each fall for a special service.  This year’s celebration is the 122nd Harvest Festival and will be held on Sunday, October 6, beginning at 11 am.  A potluck dinner follows the service.  Presiding at the service will be The Rt. Rev Martin Field, Bishop of West Missouri.

St. Oswald’s was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.  In 1997, St. Oswald’s became part of the Sacred Hills Regional Ministry, along with St. Mary’s of Savannah and St. Paul’s of Maryville.  The building was modeled after the founding families’ home church – St. Oswald’s in Grasmere, England.  It was said by the early founders of the church, that if the church did not continue, it would make a good sheep shed!   St. Oswald’s was built using the gable front variant of the Shingle Style, first used in the suburbs on the East Coast at the end of the 19th century.  Many churches in the north of England were dedicated to the Sainted King Oswald, including the one at Grasmere, of which the Missouri St. Oswald’s is the namesake.  Today, traditions are maintained, including Harvest Festival.

St. Oswald’s is located in southeast Atchison County.  Directions from Mound City are Route N for 5 miles north and then north on Keystone Drive for 4 miles.  From Maryville the church is 19 miles west on Highway 46 and then 4 miles south on EE.  From Fairfax, take Highway 46 east 7 miles and then 4 miles south on EE
